What Tyson Chandler brings to the Lakers

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope Tyson Chandler Brandon Ingram

After playing sparingly for the Phoenix Suns through the first eight outings of their 2018 campaign, Tyson Chandler is set to move on after over three years with the club.

Chandler, 36, is in the final season of a four-year, $52-million deal signed with Phoenix in July 15 and is making $13.6 million this season, meaning he will nearly certainly pass through waivers and be available to sign with the team of his choice.

Chandler was drafted second overall in the 2001 National Basketball Association entry draft by the Los Angeles Clippers before being immediately traded to the Chicago Bulls.

That, according to Stein, is the Lakers, who are getting solid minutes out of JaVale McGee in the pivot, but are severely lacking while he is off the floor.

Chandler is considered one of the strong, veteran leaders in the league, and he will be a welcome addition to a largely youthful Lakers locker room.

They may sign find help in the form of veteran Tyson Chandler. He also gives the Lakers a shot-blocking defensive presence when people get beat on the perimeter.

As the Los Angeles Lakers will assembling their roster via free agency, it quickly became apparent they lacked size. Chandler - who was serving as the mentor - averaged 3.7 points and 5.6 rebounds in seven games. Among the 132 players who defended at least 150 shots in the restricted area in 2017-18, a group that includes many perimeter players, Chandler ranked 84th in terms of percentage allowed - not far ahead of Kuzma (67.9 percent). Over the course of the season, no team has given up more than 71.9 percent shooting in the restricted area. That type of experience is a good thing for a team aspiring to make it to the NBA Finals, at least eventually. The Lakers may have a lot of talent, but this acquisition fills a hole they desperately needed to fill. The next chapter of Tyson Chandler's career begins now in LA!
