Djokovic and Federer win to set up Paris Masters semifinal

Khachanov hammers ailing Zverev in Paris Masters

Djokovic, who will regain his world No.1 ranking next week, faces Federer on Sunday morning (1.30am AEST) after the Swiss great's comfortable 6-4 6-4 win over Kei Nishikori to move a step nearer to winning his 100th career title. The Serb leads head to head meetings 24-22, he won the last match at the Cincinnati final this year in straight sets.

Novak Djokovic recovered from one set down to beat Croatia's Marin Cilic and reach the semi-finals of the Paris Masters.

"No idea if it was the last match", Federer replied when asked whether Saturday's loss to Djokovic could be the final time he plays in Paris.

Khachanov will now rise to a career-high world No 11 when the rankings are updated on Monday and overtakes Borna Coric as the second alternate for next week's ATP Finals in London.

It was the 4th successive win for Djokovic over Federer, and the Serb will play against Russia's Karen Khachanov.

Federer won 28/29 first serves, saved the only break point he faced, and took full advantage of the fast courts to attack the front of the court with plenty of success.

The 22-year-old, ranked at number 18 in the world, simply refused to allow the new world number one to settle in the showpiece encounter.

After being broken to go 2-1 down in the final set, Djokovic smashed his racquet, accepted the code violation and fumed in his seat before immediately breaking back.

Karen Khachanov of Russian Federation (R) with the winners trophy alongside runner up Novak Djokovic of Serbia after the final. "Maybe I'm not crying, but still I'm really happy", he told reporters later. After the two players held their serves for 4-all, Khachanov broke for the first time before bagging the first set 6-4.

Earlier, Khachanov continued his strong recent form by beating Dominic Thiem 6-4 6-1 in just 71 minutes.

Khachanov is the first Russian to win an ATP 1000 Masters tournament after Nikolay Davydenko who won in 2009.

"When you lose a close match like this you always have regrets", he said.

"I was thinking, 'OK, (Djokovic) has, I don't know, 70 titles and I have three, '" Khachanov said. "I couldn't be happier to finish the season like this.

Put me under big pressure from the first ball, actually", Thiem said.

"I need to keep on working with my team and to improve day by day and to compete with guys like Novak at the biggest tournaments more consistently".
