Sri Lanka Decides to Summon Parliament amid Political Crisis

But the president's office has not yet issued a formal statement.

The president suspended parliament for 20 days until November 16 after sacking Wickremesinghe, in a move to put off a parliamentary vote that would have gone against his choice for prime minister.

President addressing the nation, recently, said the plot to assassinate him had prompted him to appoint former President Mahinda Rajapaksa as the PM and confirmed the involvement of a Cabinet Minister too in this plot. Palitha Range Bandara, a United National Party lawmaker, has said that he was offered millions of dollars and a minister portfolio if he crossed over. The Sirisena government's plan with the UN Human Rights Council to investigate soldiers accused in the deaths, kidnappings and forced disappearance of civilians and journalists could be shelved because of a hard-line element in Rajapaksa's government that considers prosecuting soldiers engaged in the civil war unpatriotic. Rajapaksa's return could increase China's clout in Sri Lanka.

In remarks broadcast on state television, Rajapaksa told a meeting at his office that Sirisena made a decision to summon Parliament on November 5. Thousands of Sri Lankans also protested in the capital in the past week demanding Sirisena immediately convene Parliament.

Prior to the crisis, Wickramasinghe's UNP had the backing of 106 parliamentarians while Rajapaksa and Sirisena combine had 95 seats.

Parliament speaker Karu Jayasuriya has called a meeting for next Wednesday.

India will have to keep a keen watch on the developments and ensure that the island does not take a Chinese turn.
