Diablo Immortal Announced by Blizzard - The Action-RPG Goes Mobile

Blizzard Entertainment

If you count yourself among the previously-mentioned fans who have been holding out for word about Warcraft 4, you're still out of luck.

Blizzard's previous promises of "multiple Diablo projects" bore fruit during the keynote with the announcement of Diablo Immortal, a "full-fledged action-RPG you can play everywhere with everyone". Skarn intends to gather the fragments of the corrupted Worldstone and use them to resurrect Diablo. Blizzard games tend to have a certain quality to them and Immortal looks to be no different with its great graphics, multiplayer compatibility, and multi-class system. Players will be able to team up with others in open area locales, but the game will also feature more than a few instanced dungeons.

The new game takes place after the events of Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction and will tell new stories in the Diablo-verse set before Diablo 3.

Specifically, Blizzard said Diablo Immortal would feature large, "shared outdoor zones" where players could explore the overworld and encounter other players online.

For a newcomer to the series, I personally loved the gameplay trailer of Diablo Immortal and can't wait to have this new experience on my smartphone along with my friends. "Leading the invasion of Sanctuary is the demon known as Skarn, Herald of Terror - Diablo's most powerful lieutenant - who now rallies a new demonic army", according to Blizzard.

Release date for "Diablo Immortal" has yet to be revealed, but Blizzard already showcased the line-up of characters gamers can choose from: Barbarian, Monk, Wizard, Crusader, Demon Hunter and Necromancer. "And then around the world in many regions, it's their primary gaming device, and so it's always been our aspiration [to bring games to them]". We can kind of consider Diablo Immortal as something like World of Diablo but with all of Diablo 3's classes (minus the Witch Doctor) and played from an isometric viewpoint.

The backlash has even manifested in-person at BlizzCon, with one attendee sarcastically asking the Diablo developers if the game's announcement was "an out-of-season April Fool's joke".
