Oprah campaigns for Democrat Stacey Abrams for Georgia governor

Watch: Battling for Attention Over Oprah Mike Pence Forced to Tell GOP Voters ‘I’m Kind of a Big Deal Too’

Oprah Winfrey's impassioned speech on Thursday at a campaign event for Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams (D) earned praise from an array of media figures, including those on President Donald Trump's favorite TV channel: Fox News. In 2008, incumbent GOP Senator Saxby Chambliss was forced into a runoff with Democratic challenger Jim Martin, who had been buoyed by an increased black turnout with Barack Obama at the top of the ticket.

"I was sitting at home in California, minding my own business, but I could not stop hearing about what's going on down here", Winfrey said, charming the crowd that had gathered to see her. "I came for myself, and I approve this message". I don't want to run. For both parties, the result of Georgia governor's race will be an indication of where this big, increasingly purple state goes in the coming years.

"I want to tell you...no one paid for me to come here". 'I'm not here to test any waters.

"And I've got a message for all of Stacey Abrams' liberal Hollywood friends: This ain't Hollywood".

In a direct call to women, Winfrey said it hasn't even been 100 years since women had the right to vote, and called for women to honor the legacy of those who fought for the right.

"For anybody here who has an ancestor who didn't have the right to vote, and you are choosing not to vote - wherever you are in this state, in this country - you are dishonoring your family", Winfrey said in Marietta, Georgia, an Atlanta suburb. "When I stand in the polls, I do what Maya Angelou says, I come as one, but I stand as 10,000".

Oprah Winfrey returned to the campaign trail on Thursday for Stacey Abrams, a Democrat who is running for governor of Georgia, lamenting "all the noise", "crazy talk" and "vitriol" that is now part of political discourse.

More than 1.5 million Georgians already have cast ballots.

Oprah surprised some Georgia residents after she went door knocking, saying it was her very first time canvassing for any political candidate and that she's optimistic about Abrams.

When a woman opens the door, she lets out an excited cry. In January, when she gave a speech at the Golden Globe Awards, it ignited speculation that she too may be looking to run for president in 2020. Those allegations, which are largely unfair, have brought another former president into the discussion: former Georgia governor Jimmy Carter, who amplified calls for Kemp to resign his current position.
