Va. sisters were found dead in NYC, duct-taped together

A passerby called police after spotting the bodies

The sisters' mother told detectives that a Saudi official called her the day before the bodies were discovered and said the family had to leave the us because her daughters had applied for political asylum.

According to the NYT, the police had initially struggled to identify the women but later said they were 22-year-old Rotana Farea and 16-year-old Tala Farea who lived in Fairfax, Virginia. A spokeswoman for the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner did not return messages Sunday seeking information.

The girls' movements before their death are not yet clear but police said they had moved to the U.S. with their mother in 2015, settling in Fairfax, more than 200 miles from where their bodies were found on 24 October.

"We are looking at all clues in their past life", he said.

"We are out to get justice for those two girls and find out exactly what happened", he added.

The consulate has been in contact with the sisters' family and appointed an attorney to follow the investigation, officials said. Such questions were re-directed to the Saudi Embassy.

Furthermore, a Saudi official at the kingdom's embassy in Washington DC categorically denied to Arab News that the embassy had made any calls to the mother with regards to her alleged daughters' political asylum claim.

Saudi Arabia has recently come under fire for the murder of US permanent resident Jamal Khashoggi.

The NYPD says there's no known nexus between the sisters' death and the Saudi government.

Detectives also said the girls' mother had talked to them the day before their bodies were found. [T] his would be the logical conclusion to that. WTOP has been unable to reach family members regarding the sisters' deaths.

As of Tuesday, investigators still had not determined how they died.

George Mason, a public university with 35,000 students has close ties to Saudi Arabia. No response from USA officials was forthcoming at the time of publication.
