National Football League deadline heats up with Golden Tate, Demaryius Thomas trades

The Denver Broncos have traded receiver Demaryius Thomas to the Houston Texans. More

In trading for Thomas on Tuesday before the National Football League trade deadline, the Texans didn't give up a lot in the process with a 2019 fourth round pick going to Denver, along with the two teams exchanging seventh round selections too. The Broncos are acquiring the Texans' 2019 fourth- and seventh-round draft picks as part of the deal, while Houston gets back the Broncos' 2019 seventh-round selection.

Despite the fact that Thomas is a team legend and will be in the Ring of Fame as soon as he's done playing, this was the right move for the Broncos, who would have probably had to release Thomas at season's end anyway. He may be double-teamed more often.

That is a significant amount of cap space for a team that desperately needs it, given their huge cap numbers for Case Keenum and Von Miller next year.

However, Keenum never clicked with his teammates and has been largely disappointing, already throwing three more interceptions this season than he threw all of past year.

"He made so many big plays", Elway said.

Trading Thomas may not be a death knell to the Broncos' already underwhelming season, but it does indicate that the organization is thinking that the season may be over.

Thomas is signed through next season, but has a base salary of $14 million, which would have been interesting if he would have came to New England.

The wide receivers are on the move. He put in some great years in Denver, including a championship season, but that's too expensive of a contract for a team with young talent waiting in the wings and a season that has taken a turn for the worst.

The Broncos' warm feelings for Thomas might subside by Sunday when they kick off their Week 9 game against ... the Texans. Fellow wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders, cornerback Chris Harris, center Matt Paridis and others joined Broncos officials in honoring Thomas upon his exit.

There are two reasons Denver wanted to trade Thomas before Tuesday's deadline.
