Megyn Kelly's future at NBC uncertain after blackface remarks

39;TODAY' Anchors Sound Off on Coworker Megyn Kelly's 'Blackface' Comments During Morning Broadcast

According to multiple reports, NBC has canceled Megyn Kelly Today following the controversy surrounding her comments about blackface.

After she made the comments, Kelly retained the services of Bryan Freedman, one of Hollywood's litigators.

Megyn Kelly's lawyer is set to meet with NBC executives on Friday, Mediaite has confirmed, and he's armed with a demand: that Ronan Farrow bear witness to the proceedings. This reported decision comes just 48 hours after she received huge backlash for her racist defense on Megyn Kelly Today.

Access does not have an official comment from Kelly or NBC News at the time of this posting.

However, Kelly's first week hosting Megyn Kelly Today wasn't exactly smooth sailing. All that for wondering whether it'd be offensive for a white adult who sincerely admired a black person to dress up as them, replete with skin-darkening, as a tribute for Halloween. She basically said she didn't think it was racist and feels that anyone should be able to wear blackface as long as it was a character.

NBC attempted to command lofty price hikes in the 9 a.m. hour, when Kelly's show airs, during last year's upfront ad haggle - when networks look to secure a bulk of their ad commitment for the following season - but received pushback from advertisers.

In the next few weeks, NBC and Kelly's relationship soured.

Still, for NBC, it's a big blow, especially given her reported $69 million contract. Megyn is barely one year into a massive three-year contract, and she was arguably fired for cause.

She apologized later in the day and on her show Wednesday, but there are published reports that her time at NBC could end soon.

"It seems to me that maybe she has a target on her for some of those things that she said, which is kind of fascinating because NBC, as we know, talks to us constantly about the inequality of the sexes and how [bad] those conservatives are", Stu said.

In recent months, prior to the recent controversy, tensions have been growing between Kelly and NBC News management.

NBC representatives said they had no comment beyond the discussion of why Kelly wasn't on the air Thursday. No reason for the decision has been given by the talent agency, but insiders suggest that a potential conflict of interest would emerge in the event of a clash between Kelly and the network as CAA also represents the NBC News president, Noah Oppenheim.

After their marriage ended, Kelly did an interview in which she said she had been "betrayed" by someone before she met her current husband.
