Chinese, Russian spy agencies tapping Donald Trump's personal phone

Hua said the New York Times should know if they publish this type of report it provides another piece of evidence of making fake news.

"The so-called experts on Trump over at the New York Times wrote a long and boring article on my cell phone usage that is so incorrect I do not have time here to correct it", Trump wrote on Twitter.

Regarding her suggestion that Trump use a Huawei instead of an iPhone, this appears to be a sly reference to the United States government forbidding its agencies from using any technologies or services from the Chinese company.

Revelations about Trump's phone were first reported by the New York Times on Wednesday, and were leaked by security officials whom the Times described as frustrated "with what they considered the president's casual approach to electronic security". South China Morning Post reports that Hua Chunying, spokeswoman for the foreign ministry, said that if Trump is anxious about his iPhone being tapped, he should switch to Huawei (the implication being that a Huawei phone would be more secure).

The Times reported that the president uses his own iPhones to call friends and "gossip, gripe or solicit their latest take on how he is doing".

The White House didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Trump has been asked to give up his third iPhone but wants to keep it as "unlike his other two phones, he can store his contacts in it".

Chinese officials rely on Chinese businessmen and others with ties to Beijing to feed arguments and viewpoints to Trump's friends in an effort to influence him, the Times reported, citing the U.S. officials.

American spy agencies learnt that Beijing and Moscow were eavesdropping on the president's calls from sources inside foreign governments and by intercepting communications between officials, it was claimed.

MSNBC's Chris Hayes mockingly suggested Trump should "just make every single call on speakerphone on live TV". They said the Chinese have determined a list of contacts with whom the president speaks most frequently.

Russia's operation is believed to be less sophisticated because of his "apparent affinity" for President Vladimir Putin, a former official is cited as saying.
