USA warships sail in disputed waters

Two U.S. Navy warships sail through Taiwan Strait

It is the second time this year that the U.S. Navy has conducted such a transit; the first occurred in June.

MND issued a statement in the evening saying two USA military vessels are going through Taiwan Strait, which is global waters, as a routine operation, but gave no further details about the passage.

Two U.S. warships sailed through the Taiwan Strait on October 22, a military spokesman said, in a move bound to aggravate China amid heightened tensions with Beijing.

The ships sailed from south to north along the waterway separating mainland China from Taiwan, according to a CNN report.

Beijing "expressed its concern to the USA side" as "the Taiwan issue concerns China's sovereignty and territorial integrity", Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told a regular news briefing.

Mattis added that "the USA will fly, sail, and operate wherever global law allows, and we encourage all nations to confidently exercise their right to do the same".

A pair of U.S. naval vessels sailed through Taiwan Strait in a move that may further exacerbate the already strained relations between Beijing and Washington, with Taiwan's defense ministry claiming that it was in full control of the situation.

Hua said Beijing urged Washington to "scrupulously abide by the one-China principle" and "carefully handle the Taiwan-related issues in an appropriate manner".

The Pentagon says Washington has sold Taiwan more than 15 billion dollars in weaponry since 2010.

This came after the Chinese military conducted large-scale military exercises in the Taiwan Strait in April.

"So it was, I think, a familiar exchange". -China relationship, which also include a bitter trade war, USA sanctions, and China's increasingly muscular military posture in the South China Sea.

China, concerned that United States military actions around Taiwan will embolden pro-independence factions on the self-ruled island, has bolstered its military presence in the area this past year. It has carried out numerous military exercises in the Taiwan Strait, and persuaded several nations to switch diplomatic relations from Taiwan to China.
