Democratic Congressman Beto O'Rourke has parlayed positive press into a $10 million fundraising advantage over Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Rep. Beto O'Rourke (D-TX) shake hands after a debate at McFarlin Auditorium at SMU on September 21, 2018 in Dallas, Texas.
This comment seems to raise some questions about how Trump defines "long". Cruz called Trump a "sniveling coward" and refused to endorse him when he spoke at the Republican National Convention, prompting viewers to boo him off the stage.
"Senator Cruz is not going to be honest with you", O'Rourke said Tuesday, after Cruz described O'Rourke's voting record on environmental issues. Cruz noted O'Rourke is "the only Democratic Senate nominee in the country who has explicitly come out for impeaching President Trump". "Cruz accepted $120,000 from the Political Actions Committees who represent the corporate interests that benefited from this tax cut", O'Rourke charged. Trump wrote. "Beto is a Flake!"
"He's dishonest. It's why the president called him Lyin' Ted, and it's why the nickname stuck, because its true", O'Rourke said. O'Rourke set a Senate record for a single three-month period with $38 million in third-quarter donations, more than triple the haul for Cruz.
A poll average compiled by Real Clear Politics gave Cruz a lead of 7 percentage points, and a new CNN poll published on Tuesday gave Cruz a similar 7-point margin. "Beto O'Rourke, who wants higher taxes and far more regulations, is not in the same league with Ted Cruz", Trump said. Early on, O'Rourke accused Cruz of not being able to stand up to the president for Texans, while Cruz went on to dismiss the idea O'Rourke would be able to work with the president after expressing support for his impeachment.
The debate showcased differences over social media regulation to combat foreign interference in election - O'Rourke said he was open to it; Cruz was opposed - and a stark split on the Supreme Court and the potential for the reversal of the Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion. He struggled at times to retort while Cruz, an experienced debater and former litigator, painted him as anti-police and out of step with the right-leaning Texas electorate.
With Election Day just three weeks away, Tuesday night could be one of O'Rourke's last shots to gain ground - this is the race's last scheduled debate after one in Houston was canceled amid Senate floor votes on Kavanaugh's confirmation. The president carried Texas by a relatively small nine points in 2016.
The two also sparred over Cruz's role in the 2013 shutdown of the federal government, which he largely spearheaded as a means of opposing the Affordable Care Act, known as ObamaCare.

She was noted telling a crowd in her constituency of MA she was taking a "hard look at running for president" in two years time. For the rest of us, though, this is just another depressing example of the dead end of what amounts to modern ancestor worship.
