Prince Harry and his wife Meghan are expecting their first child in the spring of 2019, around a year after their glittering wedding injected Hollywood glamour into the British royal family.

It is no surprise the couple, who have been married for five months, feature on the front of most of the UK's national newspapers on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Theresa May said on Twitter: "My warmest congratulations to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex on the happy news they are expecting a baby in the Spring".

"I hope the weather holds up because it will be a wonderful experience for everybody, and what better place to be able to welcome them", Berejiklian told Network Nine television.

"Hopefully we'll start a family in the near future", Harry had said in a TV interview when they announced their engagement in November past year.

The couple married in a lavish ceremony in May and have been the subject of serious baby speculation ever since.

"I can't wait to start a family, but in due time", she said.

Experienced three-time parents William and Kate will be able to offer advice to Harry and Meghan on everything from sleepless nights, feeding and weaning to tantrums and choosing the right school.

They also visited Taronga Zoo to open the Taronga Institute of Science and Learning as well as meeting two koalas named after them - which seemed to be a highlight of the day for a beaming Meghan!

The sporting event founded by Harry in 2014 gives sick and injured military personnel and veterans the opportunity to compete in sports. In addition to Australia, the Duke and Duchess of Sysexec will travel to New Zealand, Fiji and Tonga.

Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove, the queen's representative in Australia, presented the couple with their first baby gifts, a stuffed kangaroo and a tiny pair of fleece-lined Ugg boots.

The palace said medical advice had been taken ahead of the trip.

Celebrities, politicians and other public figures have reacted with joy to the announcement from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex that they are expecting a baby.

The plane landed at Amsterdam airport Schiphol, so Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were not injured.

"Australia is thrilled for you both".

"Happy news to wake up to on a Monday morning", U.S. Ambassador Woody Johnson said in his own tweet.

The news comes a few months after Harry, 33, joked that he didn't want a large family.
