NEW First Legal Recreational Cannabis in Canada Sold in NL

Kamloops RCMP predicts business as usual on legalization day

Ian Power made sure he was first in line on a chilly October night to make a midnight purchase that will likely cement his place in Canadian history.

As the BBC reports, Canada's first legal recreational weed was bought in Newfoundland at midnight on Wednesday (10:30 p.m. EDT), with hundreds of people lining up to exercise their constitutional right to get stoned.

Who can buy marijuana in Canada?

The B.C. Liquor Distribution Branch, the official government distributor of non-medical cannabis in B.C., has entered a contract with Canada Post to deliver online cannabis orders to customers. Provinces are handling their own regulations for sale, growth and taxation of recreational marijuana, though there will be a nationwide minimum age of at least 18 years old.

While these regions are clearly taking full advantage of the Cannabis Law, residents of Ontario, including Toronto, will have to wait until Spring 2019 for stores to open.

Much of the paperwork needed for a blanket amnesty resides in local courthouses out of the immediate and easy reach of the federal government and the Parole Board, officials said. The brick-and-mortar stores would be privately-run.

"We are just ecstatic", she said.

Canada needs to "take a deep breath" as USA states such as Colorado and California did not have a seamless system at the outset either, said Cam Battley, chief corporate officer for licensed producer Aurora Cannabis.

The top executive at the world's biggest cannabis company said he expects a third country to follow the lead of Canada and Uruguay and legalize pot within a year.

As Canada welcomes legalization, supply shortages could develop, as happened in some US states when legalization arrived.

"We're aware of some of the kinks or growing pains that come with creating an industry out of whole cloth in 24 months", Fencott said.

Brenda Tobin and her son Trevor plan to open their pot shop in Labrador City in Newfoundland and Labrador at 4:20 pm Wednesday - 420 is slang for the consumption of cannabis.

"There's no money in the product itself", she said.

Talks over legalising marijuana in Canada have been going on for a while now with the Senate voting 52-29 in favour of legalisation. "That's not even paying someone's salary".
