Natural gas output stranded after B.C. pipeline explosion

The effects of Tuesday's natural gas pipeline rupture in B.C. north of Prince George are rippling through the Pacific Northwest as refineries adjust operations and customers are urged to conserve natural gas.

This line was shut down as a precautionary measure following the October 9 incident on its 36-inch gas line near Prince George.

FortisBC continues to ask customers to avoid all non-essential use of natural gas until the situation has been completely resolved.

"We thought it might have been a train crash or a low-flying jet", he said. I thought it might have been hail, but it wasn't. The NEB will remain on site to verify that all reasonable actions are being taken to protect workers, the public and the environment.

A statement from Enbridge issued on Wednesday afternoon said the fire had been extinguished and the company were working with the First Nations tribe to ensure there was no further disruption to their lives.

"For those that can get gas out, prices at Station 2 have come down quite a bit because the line break is south of the trading point", said King, adding producers who can't get their gas out will have to shut down their wells.

"Because it's a gas, we can compress it under pressure, which is called line pack", he said.

Premier John Horgan and Washington Gov. Jay Inslee expressed concern about the explosion and potential impact on energy customers during a joint news conference in Vancouver.

RCMP confirm a pipeline explosion is to blame for a large fire that burned 13 kilometres north of Prince George.

According to the Associated Press, the damaged Enbridge pipeline connects to the Northwest Pipeline system, which feeds Puget Sound Energy in Washington State and Northwest Natural Gas in Portland.

There's no word how long the natural gas interruption will last but GasBuddy estimates it could be at least two weeks. Madonna Saunderson said investigators reviewed "known information by all stakeholders", and concluded there are no clues to indicate the explosion was criminal in nature.
