The power of support for mental health

Qatar Airways, in partnership with Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), will host a programme of activities and events throughout the month of October created to raise awareness of good mental health and wellbeing in the workplace, as part of World Mental Health Day on Wednesday 10 October 2018.

Paul Avis, marketing director of Canada Life Group Insurance, said: "Mental health issues can be a vicious cycle for employees, fuelled by persistent presenteeism and the need to be "always on".

'I want to see a counsellor in every secondary school, every primary school having access to counselling services, a closing of the huge gap in what is spent on adult and children's mental health and a system in place that provides support and treatment for every child who needs it, when they need it'.

In response, both Australia and New Zealand have embarked upon national collaborative initiatives to improve the physical health of people living with mental health issues.

Speaking at a reception to mark World Mental Health Day, Mrs May is expected to say: 'We can end the stigma that has forced too many to suffer in silence.

"The course is proving exceptionally popular to date which we hope is indicative of the recognition that this very important and very prevalent issue is now receiving".

Mental Illness affects far more people than many people realize.

They point out that mental health issues garner just 1% of global aide despite costing "the world $2.5tn a year, a figure that is expected to balloon to $6tn by 2030 unless we take action".

One in five adults experiences mental illness in any given year, and 17% of high school students report seriously considering suicide.

The survey of office workers taken by workplace consultant Peldon Rose shows that the almost three-quarters of workers who want their employers to champion mental health and well-being rated this as more important than equality (48 per cent), sustainability (38 per cent) and diversity (31 per cent).

This year's event will be crowned with a public lecture on mental health at the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church Hall at Osu in Accra.

He also called for government's investment in social, education sector and evidence-based programmes for the mental health of the young people with a view to tackling increase of mental illness in the society.
