Kavanaugh sworn into Supreme Court after divisive fight

Retired Justice Anthony M. Kennedy administers the Judicial Oath to Judge Brett Kavanaugh in the Justices' Conference Room of the Supreme Court Building

Kennedy, (Retired) administers the Judicial Oath to Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh in the Justices Conference Room, Supreme Court Building.

It was the moment that ended weeks of controversy, the US Senate confirming President Donald Trump's nominee for the Supreme Court - Brett Kavanaugh. "Anyone watching her testimony would know, I would say, would conclude that she was being very truthful, and the one thing she that recollects with 100 percent accuracy is that Judge Kavanaugh, Brett Kavanaugh assaulted her". The court's two oldest justices are Democratic appointees: Ruth Bader Ginsburg is 85 and Stephen Breyer is 80.

Kavanaugh's confirmation had already been all but sealed Friday, when he won the support of key Senate Republican Susan Collins and conservative Democrat Joe Manchin.

But the Mr Kavanaugh spectacle, fueled by extraordinary accusations and counter-claims in nationally televised hearings, and tense battles over an 11th-hour FBI investigation to address the assault allegations, has inflamed political passions.

The final vote on Kavanaugh came amid raucous protests in the Senate chamber itself and far beyond.

Kavanaugh's ascendance to the Supreme Court now gives conservatives a working majority that could restrict abortion rights and halt the expansion of the rights of LGBT people. That rare procedural maneuver left Kavanaugh with the same two-vote margin he'd have had if Murkowski and Daines had both voted.

Though the fight to confirm Trump's pick is now official over, the impact of Kavanaugh's confirmation will have a lasting effect.

"An FBI investigation that did not include interviews of Dr. Ford and Judge Kavanaugh is not a meaningful investigation in any sense of the word", they said in a statement quoted in U.S. media.

While Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said Kavanaugh's confirmation was a shining moment for the GOP heading into next month's pivotal elections, GOP Gov. John Kasich of OH predicted "a good year" for Democrats and said he wonders about "the soul of our country" in the long term after the tumultuous hearings.

"It's a good day for America and an important day for the Senate", McConnell said, adding the division throughout this process was something the Senate and country would move past.

However, early September an American professor of psychology Christine Blasey Ford had accused Kavanaugh of sexual assault leading to a wrenching debate that captivated the attention of many. Kavanaugh emphatically denied the allegations.

Trump continued lashing out at Democrats when he rallied supporters in Topeka, telling them the opposition party conducted a "shameless campaign of political and personal destruction" against Kavanaugh.

It drew the line under a bruising nomination process defined by harrowing testimony from a woman who says Kavanaugh tried to rape her when they were teenagers - and by his fiery rebuttal.

Trump, throughout the day, insisted Kavanagh would not be tainted by the sexual assault allegations from Christine Blasey Ford and others that almost tanked his nomination, declaring he was "100 percent" certain his nominee was innocent.

Kavanaugh's confirmation was stalled by accusations of sexual misconduct when he was in high school and college, but Collins and others said they were won over by his forceful denials and a supplemental Federal Bureau of Investigation report they say produced no evidence corroborating the claims.

"A week that will live in infamy for the US Senate, permanently diminishing its stature", said Michael R. Bromwich.

His nomination was greeted by staunch protest in the District with thousands of anti-Kavanaugh protesters swarming Capitol Hill over the past week.

In his first tweet after the vote, Trump said he told Republican Senator Steve Daines it was alright to miss the vote for his daughter's wedding back home in Montana. She outlined her reasons for supporting Kavanaugh's nomination in a more than 40-minute speech on the Senate floor Friday.

Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation to the Supreme Court has been decided. "And this allegation does not take away from the fact that I believe that Dr. Ford was, at some point, sexually assaulted and that that trauma has upended her life".
