The verdict has finally been reached on the Addison Russell dilemma, as it has been reported by Jesse Rogers of ESPN Chicago that the Major League Baseball will suspend the Chicago Cubs shortstop under their domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse policy.
Russell's unpaid suspension is retroactive to September 21 and he has agreed not to appeal the suspension, Major League Baseball said.
Melisa Reidy, Russell's ex-wife, published a lengthy blog post in September claiming she suffered physical and emotional abuse during their two-year marriage.
Russell quickly denied the accusations over the summer and said in a statement that "any allegation I have abused my wife is false and hurtful". "I didn't know what was the right thing to do".
Commissioner Rob Manfred announced the ban in a statement Wednesday.
The unpaid suspension of Russell is retroactive to September 21st.
In 2018, the league suspended José Torres for the rest of the season (100 games), effective June 8, and Roberto Osuna 75 games. "I wish my ex-wife well and hope we can live in peace for the benefit of our child".
Should the Cubs elect to retain Russell, he'll be under club control through the 2021 season (this suspension's length won't impact his free-agent timeline). Asked what the chances are that Russell plays another game for the Cubs, Epstein responded, "I don't know". "So that's how I'm looking at it as we move into this next phase".
Allegations of domestic violence against Russell were posted by a third party on social media in 2017, but Reidy-Russell declined to talk to Major League Baseball at the time.
"He accepted this discipline, and so I want to talk to him about that that means, and find out more", Epstein said. Reidy didn't cooperate with the investigation at the time - a decision which she explained to Rogers in an interview that is well worth a full read for those who've yet to gather the full details of this situation.
"The part I do question myself on in general as a sports team is what is the absolute best structure that you can have for your players, for their spouses and for their families so that this never happens?"
