Rockies edge Cubs in 13-inning, wild-card classic

Cubs bullpen workhorse Steve Cishek has pitched the last three days as the Cubs face a loser-out playoff opener Tuesday

Gore's postseason numbers are even more absurd: he has appeared in eight games but taken no official plate appearances.

Why? Because they absolutely blew it.

After being five games up on the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central as late as August this season, they now find themselves out of the playoffs after just one game.

The Cubs had the right pitcher on the mound to start the game. The next night, the Rockies needed 13 innings to topple the Cubs and earn a bid in the NLDS. The Cubs have won 90-plus games each of the last four seasons.

The Cubs got another chance when Anthony Rizzo singled with two outs in the eighth, and Maddon went for it. After losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Rockies then boarded a plane and traveled two time zones forward to Chicago for a must-win game the very next day. The batting order is full of top-tier Major League Baseball hitters for the Cubs, and yet they struggled mightily on offense at different times this year.

Game 3 will be held in either Chicago or Denver, based on who wins the Wild Card game. Yet it wasn't Jon Lester's fault.

The hug struck Rockies manager Bud Black as interference.

LeMahieu took third on the play and was stranded there as Lester struck out Trevor Story and Matt Holliday to end the inning.

Kyle Hendricks gave up a tiebreaking single to Tony Wolters in the 13th inning, sending the Cubs to a 2-1 loss to the Colorado Rockies in a marathon wild-card game on Tuesday night.

Rockies closer Wade Davis came on to end the inning at 1-1 by striking out Albert Almora Jr. after Baez had stolen third. Arenado led the National League in home runs with 38 while Story was just one behind with 37.

To add more misery to the Cubs' anemic offense, the team wasted an incredible outing from their starting pitcher. If they don't get off to a strong start, it can make things uncomfortable between the on-field staff and front office.

Don't blame the wild card format for the fact that the Cubs won't be playing in a postseason series this year.
