I told Saudi king he wouldn't last without USA support: Donald Trump

Trump called King Salman on Saturday to discuss efforts to maintain supplies to ensure oil market stability

"I love the king, King Salman, but I said, 'King, we're protecting you".

However, Mr. Trump's comments on Saudi Arabia implied the kingdom's Al Saud monarchy, which oversees the holiest sites in Islam, would collapse without American military support.

Brent crude oil was trading at $84.65 (£65.09) per barrel this afternoon, having dropped from a high of $85.33 earlier in the day and near the four-year high it reached on Monday.

Oil prices are on the rise.

Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly in NY last month, Trump accused OPEC members of "ripping off the rest of the world".

"If Iran is under sanctions, the price of oil would rise and Russian Federation and Saudi Arabia can not do anything to supply additional oil to the market", Iran's OPEC governor Hossein Kazempour Ardebili was quoted as saying by SHANA, the oil ministry's news agency. While the kingdom's ties with the USA have improved under Trump, Tuesday's remarks were unusually harsh and appeared to question the stability of a monarchy in power since the 1930s.

The US military was stationed in Saudi Arabia from the first Gulf War against Iraq in 1990 to 2003, when then Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld announced pullout.

"We protect Saudi Arabia - would you say they're rich?"

The US crude oil price is pausing for breath after its strong advance ahead of US sanctions on Iran, which take effect on November 4. This is predicted to show that weekly crude inventories rose by 1,985,000 barrels after the previous week's 1,852,000 increase. Not good. We want them to stop raising prices.

Also, Russia and Saudi Arabia reportedly struck a private deal in September to raise oil output to reduce prices, and informed the United States about this move before a meeting in Algiers with other oil producers.

Despite the harsh words, the Trump administration has had a close relationship with Saudi Arabia, which it views as a bulwark against Iran's ambitions in the region.

Qatar hosts the largest U.S. military base in the region.

"When you have wealthy countries like Saudi Arabia, like Japan, like South Korea, why are we subsidising their military?" asked Trump, who pushes an aggressive "America first" policy on trade.

While the U.S. does not have any military bases in Saudi Arabia, neighboring Qatar hosts a large American contingent at Al Udeid Airbase.
