Tropical Storm Kirk forms in Atlantic Ocean

Tropical Storm Kirk Forms, Has Sustained Winds at 40 mph and is Moving West at 14 MPH |

Meanwhile, way out in the Central Atlantic where it's no threat to land, Subtropical Storm Leslie is spinning south at 7 miles per hour and blowing winds of 40 miles per hour, according to the center's Monday afternoon update.

Tropical Depression Kirk is continuing to move west across the Tropical Atlantic, but does not now pose any threat to land, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said late Sunday. The resultant storm system from this merger could lead to yet another subtropical storm system as it drifts to the south over warmer water.

"Redevelopment of this system is possible over the next few days until it encounters highly unfavorable upper-level winds while it approaches the Caribbean Sea", the Miami-based National Hurricane Center said Monday afternoon.

The Ministry in a statement on Sunday said Trinidad and Tobago now falls within the forecast cone of the Tropical Storm, which has moved the Disaster Management Units (DMUs) to begin preparations in the event that it reaches our shores later this week.

As of the 11 p.m. In comparison to tropical cyclones, these systems generally have a radius of maximum winds occurring relatively far from the center (usually greater than 60 nautical miles), and generally have a less symmetric wind field and distribution of convection. It could possibly regain tropical-storm status by then, too. After that time, with the development of the new low to the north, Leslie will likely move east until it becomes absorbed.

In the North-Central Atlantic, Leslie probably is not even subtropical. A westward motion at a similar forward speed is expected to continue through tonight. It is barely moving east at 5 miles per hour. However, they add it may begin weakening in the middle of the week.

Kirk expected to pass south of the BVI on Friday, the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) said in its latest weather update Monday morning.
