Oculus Connect 2018: Everything that was announced

Facebook Announces $399 Oculus Quest VR Headset

Earlier this year, Oculus announced the Oculus Go, a $199 standalone headset meant to drive VR experiences to people without the need for wires or smartphones.

Speaking at the Oculus Connect event in San Jose, Calif., on Wednesday, Zuckerberg said the new headset will cost $399 and will ship to consumers in the spring of 2019. This innovative system uses four ultra wide-angle sensors and computer vision algorithms to track your exact position in real time without any external sensors.

The Quest will also ship with the same Touch controllers people use for their Rift devices, Zuckerberg said.

Oculus Quest comes with a display resolution of 1600×1440 per eye, built-in audio, and 64GB storage. These are more advanced than the ones packed in with the Go; while that device only had point-and-click controllers with three degrees of motion, the Quest's feature analog sticks, triggers, and six degrees of motion control.

Insight also supports multi-room guardian.

There's been a lot of buzz surrounding Project Santa Cruz, the upcoming standalone VR HMD from the crew at Oculus. We'll believe that when we see it, too.

Standalone VR headsets like the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive Pro do their job brilliantly but both come at a premium. On top of that, Oculus Venues is adding more live music, more movie marathons, and more standup comedy, plus you'll now be able to watch select National Basketball Association games in Venues later this year. That's not to say it isn't fun - but from cable management to proper camera placement, there's a lot of fiddling to get right.

The emphasis on sharing, which was discussed throughout the keynote, isn't missing the Go, which is getting Mobile Casting and TV Casting capabilities in order to better share the view inside your HMD. At the very least, it offers a simpler, faster way to jump into gaming.

Standalone VR headsets have been done before, but they've typically been powered by a smartphone or a processor made for smartphones.
