Wojnarowski: Rockets are pursuing trade for Timberwolves’ Jimmy Butler

The idea of missing the postseason in the aftermath of a trade that leaves the Timberwolves devoid of a short-term, comparable talent to his four-time All-NBA forward is fully unappealing to Thibodeau.

"The owner's trading him", one board of governors attendee told ESPN on Friday.

Thibodeau and general manager Scott Layden initially rebuffed calls from teams as they had no intentions of parting with the veteran but Taylor has stepped in and made it clear that they must do business. Butler wants to create his own legacy and not be tied with James.

While the Heat have been "aggressive" in pursuing a Butler trade, per Wojnarowski, the Herald reports there had been no known contact between Miami and Butler's camp as of Sunday afternoon.

Wojnarowski is the same National Basketball Association insider that reported Jimmy Butler's three preferred trade destinations: the New York Knicks, the Brooklyn Nets, and the Los Angeles Clippers. All three teams will have maximum salary slots available next season.

Butler's ability to partner on the Clippers with a second star player in a deep summer free-agency market holds a strong appeal to Butler, league sources said.

"If he happens to go to NY, he might be able to influence Kyrie [Irving] to come there or another free agent".

The Heat will certainly hope that any deal between the two teams includes Hassan Whiteside, who is on a huge contract that they are desperate to ship. He made the Western Conference All-Stars and earned third-team All-NBA honors.

With the ongoing public feuds between Andrew Wiggins and Stephen Jackson, the Butler camp and the TWolves organization, and the Towns contract extension situation, more drama is the last thing Minnesota needs.

Butler, 29, is playing on the past year of a contract that will pay him almost $20 million next season and has made it clear he does not intend to re-sign with Minnesota.

Plan is to receive offers for Butler over the next two days before reaching out to the All-Star and his agent as a way to figure out where he might sign an extension and allow Minnesota to get the best possible return.
