Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who has oversight of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation, is resigning, Axios reported Monday.
Trump was not at the White House; he traveled to New York City for the United Nations General Assembly.
The New York Timesreport said Rosenstein had discussed wearing a "wire" to tape Trump and pursuing his removal from office in meetings and conversations with Justice Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation officials.
"He's expecting to be fired", a source close to Rosenstein told the publication. He also denied that there is any reason to invoke the 25th Amendment, which allows the Cabinet to replace the President if he is unfit to serve. Rosenstein appointed Mueller and oversees his investigation.
"I know that everyone knows by now that Trump is a narcissist, but we have to stop treating that like it's an unfortunate personality tick and start treating it like what it is: a serious, dangerous, mental illness", he continued.
This story will be updated. Another official said that Rosenstein made the comments about taping Trump in jest.
Trump's former longtime fixer and attorney, his onetime campaign chairman, vice chairman, national security adviser and others have pleaded guilty or been convicted, although so far no one has been charged with conspiring directly with the Russian attack on the 2016 election.
It would, according to Republican allies of the President, who have urged him to hold off on a purge of Justice Department officials until Brett Kavanaugh is safely in place on the high court.
As of Sunday, the president said he had not decided what to do about Rosenstein.
