Lawyers for the woman who is accusing U.S. Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault more than 30 years ago says she wants the FBI to investigate her allegation before she testifies publicly. Kavanaugh and Ford are expected to testify about her shocking allegations Monday.

Trump calls Kavanaugh an "outstanding man" and says it's "very hard" for him to imagine anything happened. "I'm not being critical, I'm being factual when I say this is an 11th-hour allegation".

Yesterday, lawyers for Christine Blasey Ford were hesitant to commit to a public hearing with the Senate Judiciary Committee that would subject her to more trauma and raise her profile even higher with critics who would seek to do her harm.

Kavanaugh's accuser, a university professor, has said she was assaulted at a party 36 years ago, when both were high school students.

The FBI investigated Hill's accusations because under Republican President George H.W. Bush, the White House asked the agency to add to Thomas' background check. Chuck Grassley says the FBI does not need to look into the sexual-assault allegation against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh because Republicans are conducting their own investigation.

Committee Democrats have not participated and want Federal Bureau of Investigation involvement.

But Republicans are hoping to win committee and full Senate approval for Mr Kavanaugh this month, before the new Supreme Court session begins, and have shown no taste for slowing that process. "And really it's up to the Senate".

The attorney also stated that before her client appears at the hearing, she wants an FBI investigation into Mr Kavanaugh.

"If she shows up, that would be wonderful".

On Twitter, King added that she had removed her statement from Facebook because "it served its objective and I am now dealing with a slew of requests for interviews".

Ford's attorneys said in the letter that they wanted an FBI investigation of the incident before she testifies in front of the committee in Washington.

That underscores a desire to avoid antagonising female voters at a time when the #MeToo movement has made sexual abuse a major political dynamic. Joe Biden, head of the Judiciary Committee, Hill first told the committee of the allegations on this day, as reported in the Times.

"It was more than obvious to me that she bore the scars of what she had been subjected to", Eshoo said in an interview with The Washington Post on Wednesday. It investigated Anita Hill's allegations of sexual harassment against Clarence Thomas. Some could even call a presidential order for the FBI to investigate a state-law matter to be an abuse of power.

Those demands are "not about finding the truth, but delaying the process until after the midterm elections", Senator Graham, a Judiciary panel member, said in a statement.

Feinstein said in a statement she supported Ford's proposal.

Kennedy said that he'd prefer a public hearing if Ford agrees to it, so that the American people can see and hear her in the interest of fairness.

"She will talk with the committee", Banks said.

"As a result of these kind of threats, her family was forced to relocate out of their home".

There has been no suggestion that Kavanaugh may have committed a federal crime, so the FBI would not conduct a criminal investigation.

In the Senate, the issue of when and if Ford might testify has ignited a furor, especially among Democratic women. He questioned whether the hearing would take place if Ford declined to appear. She alleges she thought Kavanaugh might inadvertently kill her as he kept her mouth covered to keep her from screaming.
