Josh Gordon released for showing up late and being 'not himself'

Josh Gordon Released by Cleveland Browns

It is unclear specifically why the Browns made a decision to cut ties with Gordon, but his release will bring to an end a saga of off-the-field problems related to Gordon's substance abuse suspensions and addiction.

The Cleveland Browns on Saturday announced they plan to release the troubled wide receiver, with General Manager John Dorsey saying in a statement, "unfortunately we've reached a point where we feel it's best to part ways and move forward". The Browns were scheduled to fly to New Orleans on Saturday afternoon, for Sunday's Week 2 game.

Two thoughts related to the Dallas Cowboys come to mind in relation to the 2013 All-Pro receiver. He did not play in either 2015 or 2016.

Reaction to the move came quickly on social media, with many glad to see Gordon finally gone for good.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Gordon injured his hamstring at a promotional shoot, and the Browns, leery of his past missteps, are reportedly already attempting to find willing trade partners. He was away from the team for nearly the first full month of training camp and did not begin practicing until last week.

But given Gordon's talent, it's likely that more than one receiver-needy club will be fascinated by the idea of doing what the Browns ultimately could not: tap into his vast well of talent while also steering him clear of his many troubles.

Additionally, Cleveland.com's Mary Kay Cabot reports that Gordon showed up late to the facility on Saturday and was described as "not himself", which the Browns believed was a sign of a potential relapse.
