A total of 62 farm murders were reported in the past financial year in South Africa‚ according to the latest crime statistics released in Parliament on Tuesday.

Asked about the discrepancies in heists‚ and questions by criminologists over the figures of certain crimes‚ police spokesperson Brig Vish Naidoo‚ said their data is accurate and is based on what was reported to parliament's portfolio committee on police.

The province with the least amount of murders was the Northern Cape at 340, a decrease from last year's 344.

"It can not be that South Africans are put under such fear, such stress and such murder".

The Western Cape had 10 stations in the top 30 murders stations‚ followed by Gauteng with nine police stations‚ then KwaZulu-Natal with six and the Eastern Cape with five stations in the top 30.

Nyanga, in the Western Cape, remained the murder capital of the country, with an increase in murders of 9.6%.

'The figures that always scare me are murder figures, ' he said.

Sexual assault also increased by a significant amount, up by 8.8%, from 6271 in 2016-2017 to 6786 in 2017-2018. "As communities‚ we must ensure that crimes are reported and that necessary assistance is provided in order for SAPS to carry out their work".

The statistics included details that there were 62 "farm murders" in the previous year - a racially sensitive issue in South Africa, where some white farmers say they face a wave of deadly attacks trying to force them off their land. This had dropped by 4.9% from the previous period.

In June, Cele announced a specialised task force to prioritise cash-in-transit heists.

He said three out of the seven crime categories decreased.

"Our emphasis should be on what should be done and not on the crime stats", said Cele. "We have to pick up the ball and change the situation for the better", he added.
