Wife of Pakistan's jailed ex-PM Nawaz Sharif dies in London

Three Times First Lady of Pakistan: Kulsoom Nawaz

Up until her husband's ousting past year, Kulsoom Sharif had never been a politician, but she memorably led protests after a 1999 military coup that ended a previous Sharif administration.

According to DawnNews, Nawaz and Maryam boarded a special plane after being released from Adiala Jail in order to be taken to Jati Umra.

Kulsoom's remains will be brought back by relative to Lahore, where the funeral is expected to take place at the family home in Raiwind.

The Sharif family has chose to bring back her body to Pakistan from London.

Sharif, three-time prime minister, is now serving a 10-year jail term in Pakistan following his conviction by a court on corruption charges.

Begum Kulsoom was elected to Lahore's NA-120 constituency in a by-poll after her husband was disqualified from the seat by the Supreme Court previous year, but left for the United Kingdom before she could begin campaigning for the by-poll.

Mr Butt's family has Kashmiri origins and has deep roots in Lahore city, while Razia Begum hailed from a well-known family of wrestlers from Amritsar, India, who migrated to Lahore in 1947.

Her first direct exposure to the harsh political landscape of Pakistan came in October 1999 when her husband's government was toppled and he was imprisoned.

Together, the couple had four children, Hassan, Hussain, Maryam and Asma.

In September that year, she handily won that by-election, beating out the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's (PTI) Yasmin Rashid, despite not being able to campaign.

Over the last 30 years, she had stood by her husband and advised him on various government affairs.

Born in 1950, she was known for her reserved nature in public, serving as a quiet foil to her husband, who was elected as Pakistan's prime minister three times.

Begum Kulsoom led defiant, lonely protests against the Musharraf regime to get her husband freed from prison. He also directed the Pakistani High Commission in London to help the family.

PML-N leaders said her funeral will be held in Pakistan.

Army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa expressed "grief and heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family", said the official military spokesman. "May Allah bless the departed soul eternal peace at Heaven-Amen", COAS", he tweeted.
