Florence isn’t the only one; 3 more hurricanes brewing

Tropics erupt as Florence, Helene and Isaac all churn in the Atlantic

A west-northwestward motion with an increase in forward speed is expected during the next couple of days. At this point, landfall may occur anywhere from SC to North Carolina and the storm may be a Category 3 or 4 storm at that time.

The storm is located 725 miles west of the southernmost Cabo Verde Islands and about 1,515 miles south-southwest of the Azores, moving northwest at 12 mph.

Forecasters say Isaac is expected to produce total rainfall accumulations of 3 to 5 inches with isolated amounts near 10 inches across the southern Leeward Islands late this week, with 1 to 2 inches anticipated across portions of the Windward Islands.

Hurricane Florence is the biggest concern to the USA, as it will likely impact the Carolinas between Wednesday and Friday.

The United States was hit with a series of high-powered hurricanes a year ago, including Hurricane Maria, which killed about 3,000 people in Puerto Rico, and Hurricane Harvey, which killed 68 and caused an estimated $1.25 billion in damage from catastrophic flooding in Houston.

As the storm advanced, Monday afternoon was a postcard-perfect day on Holden Beach with bright blue skies, placid puffy clouds and light breezes. "It is an extremely, dangerous, life-threatening, historic hurricane", said North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper.

The U.S. military said it was sending an advance team to Raleigh, North Carolina, to coordinate with federal and state partners.

More than one million people have fled toward higher ground in a mass evacuation ordered three days before the expected arrival of Hurricane Florence.

Given the storm's expected track and path, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia have already declared states of emergency as authorities prepare to deal with Hurricane Florence.

That cone is a graphical representation of a storm's probable track, according to the National Hurricane Center. "We're just a strip of land - we're a barrier island", she said.

The hurricane center's 11 p.m. forecast did show that Florence's projected path had wobbled slightly northward, but the Cape Fear area remained firmly in the storm's "cone of uncertainty".

Hurricane Isaac, much farther out to sea, has become the fifth named hurricane of the 2018 Atlantic season, the hurricane center added. The Carolinas and Virginia are set to see the most impact from this storm as of now. Since reliable record-keeping began more than 150 years ago, North Carolina has been hit by only one Category 4 hurricane: Hazel, with 130 miles per hour winds, in 1954.

There is an increasing risk of storm surge at the coast and damaging hurricane-force winds in the Carolinas.

A warm ocean is the fuel that powers hurricanes, and Florence will be moving over waters where temperatures are peaking near 85 degrees, Blake wrote.

Sustained winds on Tuesday afternoon approached 105 miles per hour, making it a very strong Category 2 storm, though it was expected to gradually weaken over cooler waters.
