Driver crashes through Lyon airport terminal and speeds on to runway

Police car chase closes Lyon airport after fugitive drives onto the RUNWAY to flee cops

A man smashed his vehicle into security barriers at two airports serving the French city of Lyon on Monday, as he was being pursued by police.

The dramatic chase was captured in an amateur video posted on social media.

A dozen police cars and a helicopter were in pursuit and officers arrested him after he leapt from the stolen Mercedes.

Highway police and a police helicopter laid chase, the regional government said in a statement. It showed the auto hitting a bump, going airborne and landing in a cloud of dust at Lyon's worldwide Saint-Exupery airport.

He added that vehicle was "almost certainly stolen", with a source close to the inquiry saying it had Luxembourg license plates.

Officials said that earlier the man smashed through a security barrier at Lyon-Bron business airport, about 20 kilometres away, before turning back.

Before driving onto the runway the man had driven the auto into the glass doors of one of the airport terminals.

A source close to the case said the man suffered from psychiatric problems but did not have a police record.

The driver ran off when the auto came to a stop but was then arrested after being tackled by officers.

The majority of flights for the rest of the afternoon have been cancelled from Lyon Airport, with such airline as Air France and HOP! particularly affected.

An AFP journalist who was waiting in one of the planes on the runway saw police vehicles pursuing the man.

The airport's operator said a Twitter that after an "incident" traffic had been suspended until further notice.
