Bob Woodward: Trump Threat ‘Has Not Been Treated Seriously Enough’

US President Donald Trump almost provoked North Korea into war with a single tweet, renowned journalist Bob Woodward said in an interview with "CBS Sunday Morning" that aired Sunday.

Woodward, whose new book "Fear: Trump in the White House" hits book stores on Tuesday, described the incident in the interview with CBS as the most risky moment of Trump's nuclear standoff with North Korea.

Woodward used as an example Trump's complaint about USA troops still on the Korean peninsula, leaving Defense Secretary James Mattis to explain "we're doing this to prevent World War III".

President Donald Trump blasted "liar" journalist Bob Woodward Monday after the Washington Post associate editor was "caught cold" in an awkward interview with NBC's Savannah Guthrie, who pressed him on his frequent use of anonymous sources criticizing the chief executive.

When asked about their denials, Woodward said: "They are not telling the truth".

"I talked to dozens and dozens of people, and have notes and documentation on lots of things", Woodward told CBS News' David Martin on Sunday Morning.

Pence said he did not know who wrote the Times column but that he was "100 percent confident that no one on the vice president's staff was involved in this anonymous editorial".

Woodward, famously one of the two reporters who unearthed the Watergate scandal for The Washington Post during the Nixon administration, also wrote that Mattis described Trump's level of understanding as that of "a fifth- or sixth-grader". The author of the anonymous op-ed in the New York Times that came from a "senior administration official" has already generated book deal offers of around $10 million.

Several prominent figures in the book have denied quotes that Woodward attributes to them.

Sanders countered that Trump is more concerned with the anonymous official who wrote the piece.

He went on to relate an episode in "Fear" in which former White House Economic Adviser Gary Cohn removed documents from Trump's desk that would end a trade agreement with South Korea so the president couldn't sign them.

"These people, these are political statements to protect their jobs, totally understandable", he said.

Trump has been bashing the book since excerpts began appearing last week, going so far as to call Woodward an "idiot". "I would say 'Okay, name me who was there". Dems can't stand losing. "As you know from having read my book there are dates and times and participants - I wouldn't have used it".

He said that he has "never seen instance where the president is so detached from the reality of what is going on".

At a National Security Council meeting, Trump disregarded the significance of the USA military presence on the Korean Peninsula, including an intelligence operation that allows officials to detect North Korean missile launches within seconds.

For example, a Trump tweet about the Korean crisis alarmed the Pentagon, the author said. It's very important whether this is somebody who witnessed and participated.

Monaem Sarker: President Donald Trump's 20 months in office have aged many Americans at least a multiple of that length of time.
