Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy off to torrid start at Aronimink

Tiger Woods off to insane start with season on the line

Former NFL quarterback and current CBS commentator Tony Romo has known Woods for years, and he said in an interview with Golfweek that they bonded over back issues. He had to wait to see if it was the best score Thursday on a soft course in scorching conditions at the BMW Championship. He was the PGA Tour rookie of the year last season after winning the Tour Championship for his second PGA Tour title.

He had just signed his card and saw that McIlroy was at 9 under, and by the time he stepped out from the hot sun and suggested another ice bath might be in order, McIlroy had dropped two shots before finishing with a two-putt birdie.

It wasn't easy for everyone. He was 1-over after eight and made his first birdie of the day on No. 9. Romo said that for Woods, the upcoming Ryder Cup is every bit as important as a major championship.

Woods is still in the mix despite Xander Schauffele (64) surging into the outright lead at 13 under at the elite 70-man event - the penultimate leg of the $US67 million ($102.6 million) FedEx Cup playoffs.

His only bogey came at the par-3 eighth, by far the most hard pin on the course.

McIlroy had been a shot clear of Woods at nine-under par after 15 holes when Woods headed for the clubhouse.

"I hit it just as good and felt like I putted just as good".

It was an abysmal day on the greens for Woods; he finished last in the field of 69 on Friday in strokes-gained: putting.

"I hit it just as good (as the opening-round 62) and putted just as good, but nothing went in and that's the way it goes", a frustrated Woods said. He birdied three of the last four for a 67.

Fourteen-time major victor Woods jumped out of the gates after teeing off the 10th hole, bagging three birdies in his first four holes before a stunning second shot from 220 metres into the par-5 16th hole. Two of his birdies came on the par-5s, and another at the par-4 11th where he knocked an approach shot from 95 yards to 2 feet. "I'm not going to say it stings too bad because I'd much rather shoot 62 today and win the golf tournament Sunday than shoot 59 today and maybe not win".
