Two-time champion Novak Djokovic ended John Millman's fairytale US Open run on Wednesday, beating the 55th-ranked Australian in straight sets to book a semifinal clash with Kei Nishikori. And he finished with 53 unforced errors. The other women's semifinal is 23-time major champion Serena Williams against No. 19 Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia. He couldn't find an answer for Djokovic's returns and was pushed around the court in each of his service games - one game lasting more than 16 minutes - to fall behind 4-1.

There was more drama three games later as Millman left the court "to change his attire due to the humid conditions".

With Kei Nishikori defeating 2014 champ Marin Cilic 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-4 in a rematch of the final four years ago at Flushing Meadows, Osaka and Nishikori give Japan semifinalists in both men's and women's singles at the same Grand Slam tournament for the first time in tennis history.

His astonishing record in deciding sets was only polished with the victory - earned despite squandering a break in the fifth set - but a place in the semifinals looked far-fetched when Cilic lead by a set and a break earlier in the afternoon.

"Well, it definitely means a lot for me, and I always thought if I were to win a Grand Slam, the first one I'd want to win is the US Open, because I have grown up here and, like, then my grandparents can come and watch", Osaka said.

Cilic had been forced to work harder during the previous four rounds, rallying from two sets down against Alex De Minaur in the third round, but he showed no signs of fatigue in an opening set that flashed by in 36 minutes.

The pair both reached their first grand slam final here in 2014, with Cilic going on to claim a straight-sets victory.

"Naomi's doing well, because she has won a Masters (Indian Wells in March)".

"I asked the chair umpire whether they are using some form of ventilation or air conditioning down at the court level side, and he said he's not aware of it - it's only what comes through the hallway", added Djokovic.

"(I was) very tested", Djokovic said. She recovered to win in three sets, with her opponent accusing her of acting after the match.

There was a subdued atmosphere on Arthur Ashe Stadium with the crowd struggling to get into the match. The third set Nishikori won the tiebreak but in the fourth game Cilic served well and naturally equalized.

Francesca Schiavone, the 2010 French Open victor, held a news conference to announce her retirement as Kei Nishikori and Marin Cilic battled it out in another lengthy contest on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

SWEAT STOPS PLAY He was helped, no doubt, by one of the most unusual breaks ever seen at a Grand Slam tournament. "I am really happy to win and to go through matches like this".

The No. 7 seed faces No. 21 Kei Nishikori on Wednesday, four years after beating the Japanese player for his first Grand Slam title.

"It's great to see", said Nishikori, who is into his third major semifinal - all in NY - but is still in search of his initial Slam trophy.

He will now face Novak Djokovic or John Millman on Friday. Djokovic said the conditions at this year's tournament were the toughest he had known in the last 10 years.
