Ex-Trump Campaign Adviser George Papadopoulos Sentenced to 14 Days In Prison

Donald Trump speaks at a campaign rally in Grand Rapids Mich. Nov. 8 2016

George Papadopoulos, a former campaign aide to President Donald Trump, was sentenced to 14 in prison Friday for lying to federal investigators as a part of the ongoing Russian Federation investigation carried out by special counsel Robert Mueller. In late April, he told them that Mifsud said the Russians had information that could harm Clinton, in the form of thousands of emails.

Papadopoulos tried futilely for months to arrange a meeting between top campaign aides and Russian officials.

Having previously pleaded guilty to misleading the Federal Bureau of Investigation about his contacts with Russian Federation agents offering dirt on Hillary Clinton to the campaign, Papadopoulos expressed remorse for his actions and received a more lenient sentence as a result.

Within weeks, he made contact with a mysterious professor, Joseph Mifsud, who touted links to the Kremlin and introduced him to others who ostensibly had connections to Russian President Vladimir Putin - including a woman who claimed to be Putin's niece. That led the aide to boast about his find in a London bar that was overheard by an Australian diplomat which then was reported to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The former aide was the first person to be arrested as part of the special counsel's investigation.

Papadopoulos, a young oil and gas consultant, was the first Trump official to plead guilty and cooperate in the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 USA election.

U.S. District Judge Randolph Moss ordered the incarceration, saying that he couldn't avoid imposing prison time given the gravity of the investigation.

"At the time he was told that, he didn't really concern himself with that", Breen said when asked if Papadopoulos believed Russian Federation did have damaging information on Clinton based on his conversation with Mifsud. "He was riding very high, as Mr. Papadopoulos said to me himself, he had just come from the inauguration of the president of the United States".

Team Trump tried to minimize his role in the campaign, labeling him a "coffee boy".

Gates has testified against Manafort who was recently convicted in Virginia on bank and tax fraud charges brought by Mueller's team.

Prosecutors said the lies Papadopoulos told slowed the investigation and prevented the FBI from arresting Mifsud before he could leave the United States.
