Florida Child Killed After Tropical Storm Gordon Strikes Land

Tropical Storm Gordon track expected to bring winds to Sebastian, Vero Beach

More than 27,000 homes and business were without power as Tropical Storm Gordon made landfall late Tuesday just west of the Alabama-Mississippi border.

Gordon continued to weaken over central MS and by 4 p.m. CDT (2100 GMT) was about 45 miles (75 km) northwest of Jackson with maximum sustained winds of 30 miles per hour (45 km per hour), the Weather Prediction Center said.

For now, Tropical Storm Gordon has winds blowing at 65 mph (100 km/hour), and its eye (the center of the storm) is located about 145 miles (235 kilometers) from the mouth of the Mississippi River, the NHC said. Boaters evacuated to safe harbors, and motorists fled barrier islands Tuesday as the Gulf Coast hustled to get ready for Tropical Storm Gordon, which was on track to hit MS as a Category 1 hurricane sometime after nightfall. Forecasters said it was possible Gordon's winds might meet the 74 miles per hour (120 kph) threshold to be a hurricane before making landfall later Tuesday.

All tropical storm warnings were canceled for South Florida and the Florida Keys as Gordon moved away, but not until after it had battered the region with heavy rain and winds. The threat from Gordon has greatly diminished across Louisiana, however, scattered showers and storms are still possible overnight and into the morning.

Governors in the states of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama have declared states of emergency, according to NPR, and Florida Gov. Rick Scott asked for "Floridians and our visitors to remain vigilant", according to a statement.

People in the Gulf Coast are dealing with heavy flooding from Tropical Storm Gordon.

"I'm asking all residents to do their part in getting ready for this storm", New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell said in a statement.

Authorities issued a voluntary evacuation order for areas outside the city's levee protection system, including the Venetian Isles, Lake Saint Catherine and Irish Bayou communities. The disturbance is expected to reach hurricane status before it hits the Gulf coast Tuesday evening.

"Gordon is running out of time to strengthen to a Category 1 hurricane". It is the peak of the hurricane season, so this isn't unusual. "Now is the time to get your plans all set", director Ken Graham said.
