No. 1 Nadal through to US Open quarterfinals

Kevin Anderson of South Africa hits a return to Denis Shapovalov of Canada during their 2018 US Open men's round 3 match

Thiem, this year's French Open runner-up, neutralised the 6-foot-8 Anderson's blistering serve by standing far beyond the baseline and he chased down everything the South African could throw at him.

However, Basilashvili could not maintain this level in the fourth set as Nadal broke for a 4-3 lead which he would not relinquish.

"I'm very happy to be through", added Nadal after setting up a rematch of June's French Open final, when he crushed Thiem in straight sets to win his 17th major.

Federer, the second seed, takes on Australian John Millman in the last 16 in the day's final match at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, while sixth-seeded Djokovic faces unseeded Portuguese Joao Sousa in the day session.

Thiem has won three of his 10 meetings with Nadal, all of those contests taking place on clay, but rejected the idea his game "matches up well" with the world number one.

Dominic Thiem squares off against Rafael Nadal for a chance to continue on at the 2018 US Open.

Thiem didn't face a single break point against Wimbledon finalist Anderson as he became the first Austrian in the last-eight in NY since Thomas Muster in 1996.

Thiem has unfinished business at the US Open.

Last year, he had two match points against Juan Martin del Potro in the fourth round but fell to the Argentine in five sets. I'm feeling really good.

Anderson won the first six of their head-to-head meetings, all on hard courts.

Nadal began his US Open campaign with a victory when his compatriot former world #3 David Ferrer was forced to retire in the second set, in what was his final Grand Slam appearance.

On the flip side, Anderson went 3-for-7 (43 percent) in break points in the match.

Thiem had never passed the fourth round at Flushing Meadows, but the Austrian, who turns 25 on Monday, served almost perfectly and gave the 6ft8in South African little time to unleash his mammoth groundstrokes.

"I think I played a good tie-break, but he played fantastic".

Basilashvili thumped 56 winners compared to 30 for Nadal, but the Spaniard's greater consistency ultimately saw him through to face Thiem, the only man to beat him on clay for the last two years. "I hope that it s a little bit more comfortable on hard court, but I m not sure".

Thiem produced a stunning service exhibition‚ winning 91% of points on his first serve and never giving up a break point.

"Of course it's some pressure because it's the biggest four tournaments, so we all want to do very well in them", Thiem said. "Constant noise going on the whole time, which obviously as tennis players, it's nice to have quiet". The day's other last-16 duel sees USA 11th seed John Isner tackle fellow big-server Milos Raonic, the 25th seeded Canadian.

After clinching his first US Open quarterfinal berth since 2011, Isner's thoughts flashed to someone who wasn't at the stadium to celebrate: his wife, Maddie.
