Lionel Messi wants Champions League focus after lean period in Europe

Aside from scoring two goals in the big win, Messi also added some new records to his already long list.

Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez scored twice each as La Liga champions Barcelona turned on the style to hammer Huesca 8-2 on Sunday while Real Betis ended a 12-year wait for a home victory over local rivals Sevilla by winning the local derby 1-0.

Barca top the LaLiga standings ahead of bitter rivals Real Madrid on goal difference heading into the worldwide break.

Messi and Suarez completed their braces at either end of the half and Ousmane Dembele, Ivan Rakitic and Jordi Alba all joined in the fun as the hosts comprehensively maintained their ideal start to the campaign.

Huesca travelled to the Camp Nou perhaps more in hope than belief, although it was the latter that dominated the Aragaon-based minnows' thinking in the early stages after Cucho Hernandez headed past Barca goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen to hand them a surprise third-minute lead.

That only awakened the champions as they hastily overturned the deficit, Messi driving a right-footed finish into the bottom far corner before Pulido turned Alba's cutback into his own net eight minutes later.

The score was levelled though and it was none other than Lionel Messi stepping forward with a turn into the Huesca box to hit the bottom corner with the help of the post on 17 minutes.

There was no way back for the Aragonese outfit when Messi scored his second of the game after the hour mark, before Jordi Alba made it 7-2. Suarez hit a lightening-quick shot past Axel Werner to spark the rout.

Ousmane Dembele scored off of a Suarez assist in the 48th minute to return the margin to two goals.

Four then became five in the 52nd minute when Rakitic produced a stunning half-volley from a Messi pass, with Werner again given no chance between the Huesca sticks. Suarez got Barca's final score with a stoppage time penalty kick.
