Storm Gordon to hit U.S. Gulf Coast as a hurricane

Tropical depression may form in the Gulf of Mexico this week

Gordon grew in size and achieved tropical-storm-force winds remarkably fast.

A system moving quickly toward the central U.S. Gulf Coast is expected to become a tropical storm by Monday evening, according to the National Hurricane Center.

A Tropical Storm Gordon Twitter account even cropped up on Monday, personifying the terror so many people felt.

A Hurricane Center forecast map showed the storm making landfall on Tuesday evening near the Alabama-Mississippi border. This is where a tropical storm warning and a flash flood watch will be in effect through Wednesday.

The latest storm of the Atlantic hurricane season has formed near south Florida.

Florence's sustained winds have reached almost 65 miles per hour and the storm is expected to grow stronger later today, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Various watches and warnings are in effect for portions of the Gulf Coast from Florida Bay to east of Morgan City, La. It will likely strengthen a bit, but still stay a tropical storm. With maximum sustained winds of 45 miles per hour, it was heading west-northwest at 16 miles per hour, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Southern Florida is expected to be hit with heavy rains and winds on Labor Day. Tropical Storm Warnings are now in effect for coastal communities in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. The storm could come ashore in southeastern Louisiana late Tuesday or early Wednesday. And isolated maximum amounts of 8 inches of rain were possible over the southern Florida peninsula, according to the NHC.

The storm is expected to cross from southwest Florida into the Gulf Coast later Monday afternoon.

While it is still too early to pinpoint the exact landfall point, southeast Louisiana from the mouth of the MS all the way to Pensacola, FL lie in the cone of uncertainty with this system.

Weather forecasters have issued storm warnings for portions of South Florida and the Florida Keys.

The center said in its 11 a.m. EDT advisory that Tropical Storm Florence was located about 225 miles (365 kilometers) west of the southernmost Cabo Verde Islands off the west coast of Africa.
