Roger Federer beats Benoit Paire to reach third round

"I'm happy to be back in NY, healthy - the last couple of years have been hard so it's nice to be back, feeling really good", Federer said in his court-side interview.

"You don't want that (loss) to happen next year".

NEW YORK, Aug 31 ― Roger Federer, still a force in tennis at the age of 37, says that when he does retire it won't be a spur of the moment decision sprung on an unsuspecting public.

He took just over an hour to close out the first two sets and led 4-0 in the third before Nishioka rallied briefly. "It's a big challenge, he's got one of the best serves in the game-he's super talented". Both could be on tap at the US Open: Federer needed a few swigs of water on another steamy day at the Open, and he played like a former champion set to uncork a celebratory bottle of bubbly.

It was typically serene progress for Federer in the first round as he was never really troubled in a routine straight sets win over Yoshihito Nishioka.

His effort levels were admirable but there was a gulf in class between the pair and Federer cruised through to set up a second-round meeting with France's Benoit Paire.

Roger Federer played down retirement talk after appearing to suggest he was considering ending his career.

Federer then broke in the next game when Paire produced a double fault on break point, enabling him to wrap up the set with a hold to love.

Meanwhile, five-time Grand Slam victor Sharapova returned to major competition after her 15-month ban at the US Open past year, when she reached the fourth round.

The mighty Swiss is the only player in the Open era to win five singles titles in a row at the tournament, and one more would take him ahead of Pete Sampras and Jimmy Connors in overall titles.

Joao Sousa of Portugal led Carreno Busta 4-6, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2, 2-0 when the No. 12 seed from Spain had to stop playing.

Sixth seed Caroline Garcia, who looked in good form in beating Briton Johanna Konta in the first round, is up against Olympic champion Monica Puig on Grandstand, followed by men's seventh seed Marin Cilic, the 2014 champion, who meets Poland's Hubert Hurkacz.

Right to the final game, errors mixed it up with some cracking winners on both sides, as both players serving well below 50 percent.

The WTA has a heat rule allowing women a break between the second and third sets.

Djokovic had a much easier victory over Sandgren, an American ranked 61st, in Wimbledon's first round this year, dropping only six games in all.
