Congress is now debating a proposal to rename the building to honor the late Sen.

A hearse bearing McCain's body arrived at the Phoenix statehouse with a police motorcycle escort for a brief ceremony honoring the Arizona senator, who died of brain cancer on Saturday at age 81.

The air around the Arizona State Capitol was heavy as McCain's body moved from the A.L. Moore Grimshaw-Mortuary Wednesday morning.

"I want them to witness what a real hero is and show them what freedom means", Morales said, noting that she already visited the mortuary that was holding McCain's casket over the weekend to lay flowers and a flag.

Ducey said that McCain "brought us above politics", so with "humor and humanity and without compromising the principles he held so dear".

"This race is consequential not just for the Democratic party and for the LGBTQ community, but for all Americans who demand an end to the political divisiveness that Martha McSally embodies", said Annise Parker of the LGBTQ Victory Fund. Trump and McCain notably disagreed over the years and Trump criticized McCain's military service, including his time spent as a prisoner of war during the Vietnam War.

"I remember him embracing a war that nobody wanted to talk about because he understood what it would cost to lose it", Graham said. "As we march forward with courage and resolve he would have demanded, may we take comfort in knowing that in that fight, John McCain will always have our back", Ducey added. She said she liked how McCain didn't act like he was above others, and praised all he did for veterans. McCain's former campaign manager Rick Davis read the letter.

Arizona's first responders lined the plaza as the Arizona National Guard team carried McCain inside the Capitol.

The memorial service will include multiple tributes, readings and musical performances, including a tribute from former Vice President Joe Biden. Jon Kyl, plus a benediction from Sen.

A memorial service, to be attended by family, friends, political leaders and other dignitaries, is scheduled for Thursday at the North Phoenix Baptist Church.

From there, McCain will depart Arizona from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Richard Russell of Georgia stands in the rotunda of a Senate office building named after him, on Capitol Hill in Washington, August 27, 2018.

Members of the public line up to pay their respects for Sen. She says Arizona lost a champion for the military. McCain passed away Saturday.

In a statement, Mr McCain's daughter Meghan said her father was a "great fire who burned bright".

Last year, McCain threatened to force an Afghanistan strategy on the Pentagon after the administration delayed issuing its own new policy for months.
