Trump accuses former personal lawyer of "making stories"

Michael Cohen is the closest member of President Trump’s inner circle to come under criminal investigation

Trump has denied an affair with the now 39-year-old actress, but admitted a hush payment - not disclosed in campaign declarations - was made to prevent "false and extortionist accusations" getting into the public domain.

Attorney Lanny Davis, who was a special counsel to President Clinton during his campaign finance investigations and impeachment trial, told CNN that "there is also a liberation in Michael's voice" since his client made a decision to plead guilty and "hit the reset button on his life and his previous loyalty" to Trump.

Michael Cohen, his ex-lawyer and "fixer", said his former boss had directed him to pay hush money to influence the 2016 election. Bogus invoices that allegedly concealed the nature of the payments could further focus direct prosecutorial scrutiny on both Trump's company and his campaign.

Mr. Manafort was found guilty of bank and tax frauds and one charge of failing to disclose foreign bank accounts, by a jury in Virginia, in the suburbs of the USA capital.

As part of his plea agreement, Cohen agreed not to challenge any sentence from 46 to 63 months. Some commentators say this alone would be enough to endanger a USA president in previous times. Asked if he knew that what he did was illegal, he told the court yes.

Trump's words came a day after Manafort was convicted on eight of 18 counts at his fraud trial.

They include "knowledge about the computer crime of hacking and whether or not Mr Trump knew ahead of time about that crime and even cheered it on", Davis said.

Cohen is facing a judge in federal court in NY on Tuesday.

No charges have been filed yet as a result of the investigation into Cohen.

Michael Cohen, former personal lawyer for US President Donald Trump, leaves federal court on August 21, 2018, in NY. "Unlike Michael Cohen, he refused to "break" - make up stories in order to get a 'deal'".

"You have to understand, Ainsley what he did and - they weren't taken out of campaign finance".

Cohen - who pleaded guilty Tuesday to a total of eight felony charges - reportedly told a judge in New York City under oath that he committed campaign finance violations "in coordination with and at the direction of a federal candidate for office", a clear reference to Trump. He was earlier seen going into an Federal Bureau of Investigation building. He entered federal court in Manhattan for a 4 p.m. proceeding. He was earlier seen going into a building where the Federal Bureau of Investigation has its NY offices.

"Where's the Collusion? They made up a phony crime called Collusion, and when there was no Collusion they say there was Obstruction (of a phony crime that never existed)", Trump said in a Monday tweetstorm.

Some Democratic senators have said that if Trump were to pardon Manafort, Cohen or any other former associate the special counsel brings down, that would represent weakness, not power.

This has been expected to be a straight plea deal to resolve the case against him. The people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to publicly discuss the case.
