"I was after her for a number of years to do a trust", attorney Don Wilson, who was Franklin's entertainment attorney for almost 30 years, told the paper.

Madonna's tribute to Aretha Franklin at today's MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) has not gone down so well.

Franklin died last week at age 76 after a historic career, and viewers of the VMAs were anticipating how the awards show would honor a woman that paved the way for so many pop, R&B and soul vocalists around the world. I shared part of my journey and thanked Aretha for inspiring me along the way. I did not intend to do a tribute to her!

The "R.E.S.P.E.C.T" singer will be laid to rest on August 31 at Greater Grace Temple in Detroit, Michigan, where several of her family members - including her father, brother, and two sisters - are also buried.

Social media was fast to slam the diva for talking about herself during what should have been a tribute for Franklin who passed away last week. The site reported that the singer will be cloaked in a white fur to represent "the purity of her angelic voice". I could go back to getting robbed, held at gunpoint and being mistaken for a prostitute in my third-floor walkup that was a crack house.

Another added: "I think your MIL has the cheek of the devil, muffin!"

Aretha Franklin, the legendary "Queen of Soul", was often called Detroit's favorite daughter, having moved there with her family aged four. "All the love that my fans, that my friends, that everybody shows me is genuine and that's something that God give me that you can't buy, bi**h". I blurted out. "You make me feel... you make me feel like an actual woman". Two large French record producers sat in the empty theater, daring me to be incredible. "You know, by Aretha Franklin". I could see they didn't take me seriously.

There was a short video of early Franklin that played before Madonna said that the icon who died Thursday "changed the course of my life", and Franklin's Respect played as the night's closing credits rolled. "I don't know what I said, I don't know what came over me".
