Due to medical restrictions placed on her travel following kidney surgery in May, she did not accompany Trump to Singapore for his one-on-one meeting in June with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

"By listening to children's ideas and concerns, I believe adults will be better able to help them navigate these often hard topics", Trump said, while also saying: "But we still need to do all we can to provide them with information and tools for successful and safe online habits".

Trump's remarks at the Rockville, Md., summit focused largely on the importance of "positive" and "responsible" online behavior.

The first lady told The Associated Press in a written statement Monday that she's looking forward to learning about the issues that children living on the continent face, as well as appreciating Africa's history and culture.

"I encourage technology and social media companies, schools and community groups, to establish more opportunities for children such as Microsoft's Council for Digital Good", the first lady said.

"First Lady Melania Trump warns against pitfalls of social media as President Trump unleashes another Twitter tantrum", one New York Daily News headline read.

Melania Trump is really doing it. He tried to persuade her not to speak out on it because he knew it would be an open door to criticism, according to the editors.

She said the first lady's call to prevent bullying of children on social media "elevates an issue that is important to children and families across this country".

Melania Trump speaks at the FPBP Summit on cyberbullying in Maryland on August 20, 2018.

First lady Melania Trump on Monday delivered a new speech to discuss her "Be Best" campaign to stop children from being cyberbullied - and she may have used the speech to take a veiled shot at President Donald Trump. She said she was also "inspired by their honest commitment to reducing peer-to-peer bullying through kindness and open communication".

And days ago, Trump called former White House official Omarosa Manigault Newman a "dog" and a "crazed, crying lowlife" who begged him for a job.

She said that America's "next generation has unlimited potential to impact our world in positive ways".

Representatives from "social media companies, federal agencies, educational organizations, youth programs, and law enforcement" participated in the event, the first lady acknowledged. She said bullying of Asian Americans is often compounded by cultural differences, and that cyberbullying is "still pervasive".

"She's addressed this before".
