Aretha Franklin: Sublime soul diva whose voice inspired the civil rights movement

Aretha Franklin

Aretha Franklin passed away at the age of 76 due to pancreatic cancer. "She had 20 No. 1 hits, including "Respect", "Chain of Fools" and "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman".

She was the first female artist to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

"And sometimes she helped us just forget about everything else and dance", Obama said.

"I was holding her hand at the bedside, holding her wrist, which was now no more than skin and bone, but her pulse was so strong and so, so full of life".

"It's hard to conceive of a world without her".

Turman, who was one of the last people to visit Franklin before her death, said she had a "great sense of humour" and that she was "always cracking jokes".

Turman recalled some of the good memories with his former wife that he remained close with until her death on Thursday, but also said she was known to be stubborn. "She just didn't take tea for the fever, as the old folks would say. [It's] incredible what she did with the song", he said.

A "source" told The Daily Beast that Franklin said "no amount of money" would persuade her to perform for him at the inauguration.

One of the most famous examples of Franklin's voice was in the song "Respect", which was originally released by Otis Redding but made iconic by the diva.

In 2010, she suffered serious health problems, but continued to perform until late a year ago, singing last in November 2017 for the Elton John AIDS Foundation in NY.

"Today I join my community, my industry and the world in mourning the loss and celebrating the life of my dear sister, friend, and ally, Aretha Franklin".

On short notice, and with little fanfare, she had been booked to perform at Trump's Castle, a casino opened three years earlier by Donald Trump in the garish Xanadu of sun and slot machines on the Jersey Shore. Wearing a glittery black blazer and long ponytail, Ariana showcased her powerful pipes while belting out Franklin's 1967 classic. The story doesn't do much to honor Franklin's legacy. "You know, there was information that I knew that I couldn't really say because the family did not want that out". They will forever be influenced by her because her voice, her emotion.

"But I flipped it and rewrote the lyrics for her".
