Koepka holds off Woods to win 100th PGA Championship

ST LOUIS MO- AUGUST 10 Brooks Koepka of the United States lines up a putt on the eighth green during the second round of the 2018 PGA Championship at Bellerive Country Club

Koepka, Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, Patrick Reed, Bubba Watson, Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler and Webb Simpson are automatic qualifiers for the American team.

A devastated Adam Scott says he will approach the majors with renewed vigour after capping a lean two years with a valiant display at the US PGA Championship.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, captain Jim Furyk said that if Woods does make the roster as a player, he will be removed from his assistant responsibilities.

We offer that context to remind that Faldo's anecdote falls in line with just how likely it seemed recently that Woods' playing career was over.

Yes, Woods finished second by two strokes to Brooks Koepka at the PGA Championship to extend his drought without a major for at least eight more months.

However, the last six months have told a different tale, and though the 42-year-old wasn't one of the eight automatic selections for the US team, Woods has built a strong case for captain's pick candidacy.

"I made a bit of a run, looks like I'm going to come up a couple of shots short", said Woods after coming off the 18th. And then when he started making that run, it brought me back to when I was a kid and when I was watching him and you heard those roars.

But while McIlroy then struggled to a third round 71 to drop out of contention, Woods covered the front nine in 31 to delight the massive crowds at Bellerive Country Club.

"I do want to be on the team as a player".

Woods, who said he wants to be chosen as a captain's pick for the US Ryder Cup team, was pleased he was able to contend at the PGA and lead in the last round of last month's British Open.

"I'm excited. I know these eight players are excited as well", Furyk told reporters.

Koepka's triumph comes hard on the heels of his successful defense of the US Open title in June, with a final round 66 leaving him on 16-under 264 as he claimed his third major in two years to join the very elite of world golf. He's already a member of the team as one of Furyk's vice captains and figures to serve a role as both player and assistant.

The 42-year-old, who had five prescription drugs in his system, later pleaded guilty to reckless driving and will spend a year on probation and undergo a diversion programme.

Three-time major victor Jordan Spieth, needing only the PGA to complete a career Grand Slam, opened birdie-birdie but took a double bogey at the par-3 sixth then followed that with three consecutive birdies.

"It's pretty obvious when Tiger makes a birdie".

The 2018 Ryder Cup begins on September 25 at Le Golf National in Paris. I think that's always great to have the support of fans and as many people as you can behind you, and I try to do that. At The Open at Carnoustie, he held the lead as he made the turn, but a 2-over 37 on the back saw him fade back to T6 as playing partner Francesco Molinari went on to win.
