Liverpool vs. West Ham United - Football Match Report

Liverpool news Alisson

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp insists that he was not surprised by the level of Naby Keita's performance on his competitive debut for the club.

"We know about our expectations and noticed the very positive atmosphere around us in the whole pre-season", said Klopp. It's good that the people can be positive but they know that this season will be unbelievably hard.

The Brazil goalkeeper made the same switch Salah completed a year ago when he moved from Roma to Anfield for 72.5 million euros last month. That's the only thing that I wanted to say: we can not be anything different from the challenger because we didn't win anything since I am in anyway, [and] it's a long time ago.

He scored in the 4-1 win over West Ham at Anfield last season and is a good bet to repeat the feat. "We know that and we have to be ready week-in, week-out for all the challenges".

The Reds looked comfortable in what could have been a tricky tie against Pellegrini's West Ham who never really looked like threatening the debuting Alisson in the Liverpool goal.

He had little to call on when Salah had to go off injured in the Champions League final against Real Madrid last season.

He scored Liverpool's third and Sturridge came off the bench in the final few minutes to score at the far post from a corner with his first touch.

It capped a superb attacking display from Jurgen Klopp's side, who had taken the lead when Mohamed Salah, who notched 44 goals in his first campaign on Merseyside, opened his account for 2018-19 by touching home Andy Robertson's fizzing, low cross on 19 minutes.

Trent Alexander-Arnold almost doubled the lead five minutes later but West Ham goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski pushed his free kick away from the near post.

Sadio Mane was a whisker away from a telling contact with Georginio Wijnaldum's diagonal ball, while James Milner's pinpoint centre eluded Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino as the home side looked for a flawless start.

Mane was on the mark again shortly after the re-start, converting on the spin from Roberto Firmino's lay-off, before Daniel Sturridge wrapped up the scoring just seconds after entering the action as a substitute.

When they took the fight to Manchester's last reigning champions a decade ago, Liverpool ultimately could not last the distance as discourse raged between the dugout, the stands and a boardroom beset by warring factions in erstwhile owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett. Mane and Salah in particular have been able to tuck in and occupy the West Ham's backline allowing Liverpool's fullbacks to overlap. To win the FA Cup he'll need to figure out what has been preventing them getting to the latter stages. It was only a check-up and the scan was clear, but he felt ill when he came back so we sent him home again.

Mane then struck in first-half injury time, finishing from a volley from James Milner at the byline.
