Former UCF assistant coach Jamil Jones was arrested and charged with assault after punching a man in New York City who later died.
Jones, 35, turned himself into police on Thursday and was charged with assault; he pleaded not guilty and was released on his own recognizance.
A college basketball coach threw a punch that killed a New York City tourist who mistook him for an Uber driver, police said Thursday.
Szabo, who was left unconscious after the altercation, died on Tuesday. According to multiplereports, Szabo knocked on multiple vehicle windows while looking for an Uber.
That suspect is Jamill Jones, a basketball coach based in North Carolina.
"It's an unfortunate and tragic incident", Jones' attorney, Alain Massena, told ESPN. The coach's next court appearance is scheduled for October 2, the Queens District Attorney's office said.
Szabo fell back, hit his head on the pavement and lost consciousness, according to police. Out of respect for the Szabo family and the integrity of the ongoing investigation, the Jones family requests privacy moving forward in this matter.
Jones sent his condolences to the family of the tourist via a statement from his lawyer. He began moving through the college ranks in 2013 at Florida Gulf Coast, before stints at VCU and Central Florida.
Mr Szabo's family said he was in New York City to attend a wedding.
Szabo worked for digital marketing firm What If Media Group; they eulogized him on Facebook, writing, "Sandor was super outgoing, friendly, and an incredibly smart businessman". We're going to say one thing and that's all.
"He was always upbeat, positive, kind and caring", the post read.
Wake Forest released a statement. "He was a really good person".
