The US is now also pushing Pyongyang to scrap its nuclear capabilities after Trump and North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un agreed a vague commitment to "denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula" at their landmark summit in June.

Countries like Russia, China and Turkey, however, have said that they would not abide by the United States sanctions, and would continue to trade with Iran.

In a tweet on Tuesday addressed to Donald Trump, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said the world is "sick and exhausted of USA unilateralism".

Photos posted to the Office of the President's website show Ri and Hassan Rouhani joined by four others from the North Korean delegation sitting across from Iranian counterparts.

The sanctions imposed on Tehran this week have already led banks and many companies around the world to scale back dealings with Iran. "Our crews that are on board our ships are well rehearsed, well prepared by the U.S. Navy when they come into our area", Votel said.

Zarif did not specify what consequences the US could face.

Iran has denounced as "U.S. unilateralism" the reimposition of sanctions in line with Trump's decision to pull out of the agreement over Iran's nuclear program.

Trump tweeted on Tuesday that the new sanctions, which were lifted under a 2015 global nuclear deal, were the most biting sanctions ever imposed. Zarif told the state-owned IRAN daily, however, there are now no ongoing talks between the countries.

President Trump slammed the Iranian regime with "the most biting sanctions ever imposed" this week; warning global leaders that anyone "doing business with Iran" will "not be doing business with the United States".

In a commentary published by the Guardian on Wednesday, Khoshroo stressed that by ditching the nuclear deal with Iran and sanctioning countries engaged in business transactions with the country, the USA is violating UNSC Resolution 2231.

European countries have also vowed to protect the nuclear deal by continuing to trade with Iran.

Among large European companies that have suspended plans to invest in Iran are France's oil major Total and its big carmakers, PSA and Renault.

Trump responded by noting that Iran could face serious consequences if it threatened the United States.

When talking about Iran's right to the Strait of Hormuz, Rouhani had commented that Americans "should know that peace with Iran is the mother of all peace, and war with Iran is the mother of all wars".

Trump has said he is ready to hold talks with Iranian leaders, without preconditions but meanwhile, his administration has vowed to press on with its pressure campaign.
