Tamil screenwriter and politician M. Karunanidhi passes away at 94

#JustIn: Kaliagnar M. Karunanidhi Passes Away At 94

He refused to pay the penalty, stayed in prison for more than a year and since then came to be known as "Kallakudi konda Karunanidhi" (Karunanidhi who won Kallakudi). It is said that he can remember the name of any ordinary party worker at any far corner of the state, reported The Hindu.

The crowd outside the hospital started to swell after the medical bulletin issued by Kauvery Hospital on Monday evening said that Karunanidhi's condition had deteriorated.

His last tweet was also a photo with Karunanidhi, when he went to wish him for his 94th birthday in June. Parasakthi, a successful play written by Pavalar Balasundaram, was penned for the screen by Karunanidhi in 1952. He also wrote the dialogues for "Parasakthi", the debut film of another tinsel town icon Sivaji Ganesan.

Karunanidhi made his presence felt in Tamil cinema as a playwright and screenwriter. Mr Karunanidhi's DMK swept the election, riding a wave of anti-incumbency.

Hours before his father's death, DMK working president MK Stalin had earlier today met Chief Minister K Palaniswami seeking space inside the mausoleum complex of the Karunanidhi's mentor CN Annadurai at the Marina. He was elevated as the chief minister following Annadurai's death in 1969.

In the years that followed, the state government alternated between Karunanidhi and its main political rival, the AIADMK. He was one of the (most senior) leaders of India.

In one case involving an alleged loss to the state over construction of a bridge, police dragged Karunanidhi out of his home after midnight. In 2016, DMK became the largest Opposition party in the Tamil Nadu Assembly. It urged the Centre to make "immediate changes in the Constitution of India to establish a truly federal set-up with full state autonomy". He silenced the critics who deemed him too old for contesting elections by becoming the chief minister of Tamil Nadu for the fifth time at the staggering age of 82!

Mr Karunanidhi managed to keep Tamil Nadu in the national spotlight by entering into alliances with the current ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in 1990 and then the Congress in 2004.
