Plane crash in California parking lot kills five people

The pilot and four passengers who were killed when a small plane crashed in a Santa Ana parking lot have been identified.

The aircraft was heading to John Wayne Airport, but it was unclear where it was coming from, according to spokeswoman Deanne Thompson. But all five people on board the plane were killed in the crash.

Nasim Ghanadan, 29, Floria Hakimi, 62, and Lara Shepherd, 42, were real estate agents based out of an office in Danville, California.

The plane struck a parked vehicle, but the occupant was inside a store and was not injured, according to the Orange County Fire Authority.

"I saw the plane come around and I realized it was probably going to come down", witness Alex Perkins told KCBS. Several streets surrounding a nearby shopping center and the South Coast Plaza mall are closed.

Capt. Tony Bommarito of the Orange County Fire Authority said the accident could have been much worse.

The plane was registered to a San Francisco company and had flown from the East bay suburb of Concord, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) records. The agency will investigate and the National Transportation Safety Board will determine the cause of the accident, the FAA said in a tweet.
