ESPN's Paul Finebaum on what's next for Urban Meyer

Urban Meyer Already Has a Path to a Comeback

The Ohio State University announced on Thursday that its Board of Trustees formed a "special independent board working group related to the investigation involving Urban Meyer".

Ohio State has placed coach Urban Meyer on paid administrative leave while it investigates claims that his wife knew about allegations of abuse against an assistant coach years before he was sacked last week.

Urban Meyer is on paid administrative leave until the investigation concludes.

The Ohio-based restaurant chain said in a statement it would be suspending its "head breakfast coach" partnership deal with Meyer. As you got deeper and deeper into the story it got progressively worse, and since then I haven't seen any indication that from that school or from anyone else that he is. Smith even provided McMurphy with a series of text messages between her and Meyer's wife, Shelley Meyer, in which Meyer offered support and promised to tell her husband about the violence.

But Meyer said he knew nothing of the 2015 abuse allegations until the day he let Smith go.

SC football coach Will Muschamp followed Urban Meyer at Florida, and by multiple media accounts had to fix a Gators program that had been left in a tough spot. Shelley Meyer is a registered nurse and is employed as an instructor at Ohio State.

On Wednesday, Meyer's Ohio State program was rocked by an article chronicling accusations of domestic violence against a longtime staffer. He played for Meyer as a walk-on at Bowling Green, worked for him at Florida and was hired as the wide receivers coach when Meyer came to Ohio State in 2012.

The extension also increased Meyer's salary to $7.6m for 2018, an $800,000 raise over what he was scheduled to earn. The season starts September 1 with a game against Oregon State in Columbus. "This allows the team to conduct training camp with minimal distraction". "I can't say it didn't happen because I wasn't there", Meyer claimed at Big Ten Media Days last week.

Add it all up, however, and Meyer's future in Columbus is more than murky.

Meyer was out of coaching for a season but was hired by Ohio State in November 2011. In it, he also says it's "beyond doubt" that Meyer did not cover up a crime or witness one just after he says Ohio State should wait for all of the facts of the case before acting.

At the minimum, in an age where many colleges and leagues and business owners are preaching "no tolerance", these charges are a truly ugly black eye on The Ohio State University and Meyer.
